Categories & Requirements
The ECN registers individuals across several categories based on academic qualifications and professional experience.
Professional Engineer — Pr.Eng
A professional bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognised university, plus at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
Incorporated Engineer — Inc.Eng
A bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Technology from a recognised tertiary institution, plus at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
Engineering Technician — Eng.Tech
A national diploma or equivalent from a recognised institution, plus at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
In-Training (Candidates)
Available for graduates who meet the academic requirements above and are undergoing professional development under the supervision of registered professionals.
Benefits of Registration
Professional registration is a legal requirement under the Engineering Profession Act 18 of 1986 for those practising in defined engineering disciplines.
Legal Compliance
Registration is mandatory for engineering practitioners to promote public safety, health, and interest.
Reserved Titles
Registered individuals are legally entitled to use post-nominals such as Pr.Eng, Inc.Eng, and Eng.Tech.
Professional Recognition
Provides peer and public recognition of your competence and adherence to high ethical standards.
Career Advancement
Many employers require registration for senior roles. It also allows for the supervision and mentoring of graduates.
Fee Schedule
All fees below are subject to a 30% surcharge for foreign nationals and foreign entities.

Continuing Professional Development
Current Status
While not currently mandatory for maintaining registration, registered persons have a professional responsibility to keep their knowledge and expertise up to date.
The proposed new Engineering Professions Act will make CPD reporting mandatory for all registered professionals once passed into law.
No-Cash Payment Policy
The ECN office does not accept cash payments. All fees must be paid via bank deposit or electronic transfer. Visit the Contact page for official banking information, and use your registration number or name as reference.
